Powder coating is increasingly accepted as thepreferred finishingprocessfor the future for many applications.Increasinglystringentenvironmentalregulations,rising costs in allareas, anddemands by consumersfor betterquality andmore durableproducts areamong the challenges facingtoday'sfinisher.Powder coatingprovides asolution to these challenges andothers.
Powdercoating is the technique ofapplyingstaticallycharged dry paint to apart which is then heated in anoven tomelt andcurethe paint. Thefinal cured coating is the same as a2-packwet paint.The powderedpaint is normally applied by using a powderfeedsystem andgun toelectrostatically charge and spray the powder ontothepart. Forsomeuses, such aspipes, the part being coated is dippedinto afluidisedbedof powder. The partis then placed in a curing oven.Duringthecuringprocess a chemicalcross-linking reaction is triggeredand itisthischemical reaction whichgives the powder coating manyofitsdesirableproperties.
Powder Coating gives a dry,clean,durablecoating.Itis environmentally friendly. Unlike liquid finishingweresolventsareused, powder coatings do not release VolatileOrganicCompoundsintotheatmosphere. Unlike wet spraying, in many casesthe oversprayedpowdercan be recycled for re-use.
Powdercoating can produce much thickercoatingthanconventionalliquidcoatings without running or sagging.Additionallya widerange ofeffectsare easily accomplished which would beimpossibleto achievewithothercoating processes.
