A soap dish is a dish designed to hold a bar of soap. The slipperiness of soap when wet can make it difficult to keep a bar of soap in one place on a flat surface, such as the side of a bathtub or washbasin, where soap is required for washing; it is for this reason that soap dishes are used. They are commonly elliptical in shape (though other shaped dishes do exist) and can be made from a variety of materials, including ceramic, glass, plastic and metal. Soap dishes come in many different forms; as well as individual, standalone dishes, wall-mounted soap dishes exist. Some washbasins also have their own soap dishes; these consist of a small indentation, slightly larger than a bar of soap, near the taps.
