Almost no substance except the diamond can produce scratches on its surface, and its chemical properties are stable which is insoluble in most    solutions. Furthermore, because of its high strength, windows made of sapphire are thinner.

A high grade of sapphire would have little or no light scatter or lattice distortion and be used mainly for the most demanding optical applications.
