Submerged arc furnace is also known as electric arc furnace or resistance electric furnace. It is mainly used 

to reduce smelting ore, carbonaceous reducting agent and solvent etc. Mainly adapt to production of 

ferromanganese, ferrochrome, silicon mangansese alloy and other ferrous alloy.

Electric arc furnace is an electric furnace for smelting ores and metals at high temperature produced by 

electrode arc. When gas discharge forms arc, the energy is very concentrated, and the temperature of 

arc region is above 3000 C.

Arc furnace is using electricity as the fuel source, and utilizeds the arc hight temperature produced by electrode and furnace charge to heat and melts the furnace charge.  Construction :

An electric arc furnace used for steelmaking consists of a refractory -lined vessel, usually water -

cooled in large sizes, coverded with a retractable roof, and through which one or more graphite

electrode enter the furnace. The furnace is primarily split into three sections.  

The shell,which consists of the sidewalls and lower steel bowl

The hearth, which consists of the refractory that lines the lower bowl.

The roof, which may be refractory lined or water cooled , and can be shaped as a section

of a sphere, or as a frustum ( conical section ). The roof also supports the refractory delta in

its center, through which one or more graphite elctrodes enter.
