Application

Mainly used in magnetic materials, glass, ceramics, purify water, paints, pigments, steel, carburizing, manufacturing other barium salts and reagents etc.

Role in Ceramics industry

Barium carbonate is widely used in the ceramics industry as an ingredient in glazes. It acts as a flux, a matting and crystallizing agent and combines with certain colouring oxides to produce unique colours not easily attainable by other means.

In the brick, tile earthenware and pottery industries barium carbonate is added to clays to precipitate soluble salts (calcium sulfate and magnesium sulfate) that cause efflorescence.

Role in Glass industry

As an ingredient, Barium carbonate is always used in the production of glass. It acts as a flux, a matting and crystallizing agent and combines with certain colouring oxides to produce unique colours not easily attainable by other means.

Barium Carbonate procedure for the preparation of glass capillary columns. It is a barium oxide carrier which optimizes the refractoriness and the workability of the glass.

Production

Barium carbonate is always produced in three ways commercially from barium sulfide.

  • 1. Carbonizatin method

Blow carbon dioxide into the solution of barium sulfide for carbonization, then slurry of Barium Carbonate comes out. After desulfidating, washing, filtering under vacuum in the temperature of 300 ° C, dry barium carbonate slurry, comminute it, then barium carbonate is born.

BaS+CO2+H2O=BaCO3+H2S

  • 2. Double decomposition method

After metathetical reaction between Barium sulfide and ammonium Carbonate, wash, filter, dry, then Barium Carbonate come out.

BaS+(NH4)2CO3=BaCO3+(NH4)2S

With Double decomposition method Barium Carbonate can also be made by reaction between Barium chloride and potassium Carbonate.

BaCl2+K2CO3=BaCO3+2KCl

  • 3. Witherite method

The witherite ore react with ammonium salts to gain soluble Barium salt. Recycle ammonium carbonate by adding Barium salt into it, come out the purified precipitate Barium Carbonate, filtered, dried and finish. The mother liquor obtained can be recycled.

BaCO3+2HCl=BaCl2+H2O+CO2

BaCl2+2NH4OH=Ba(OH)2+2NH4Cl

Ba(OH)2+CO2=BaCO3+H2O
