Overview of Lost Wax Technology

The model of the part is made of wax from an aluminum die, then the wax patterns are welded onto the runner system which is also made of wax - it forms a pattern tree or called pattern assembly. Next, the pattern tree will be dipped into ceramic slurry of sand or stucco, with drying process between each coating until the shell is thick enough to hold the weight of molten metal which will be poured later.

Then the Pattern tree with wax in it is going to a high pressure oven which melt the wax out. It forms a hollow in the shell. The shell is preheated before pouring to help fluidity of melton metal. A sand bed is always aside to hold the hot poured shell.

In the following process, the shell is broken and removed, so the castings can be seen now. The castings are then cut off from the metal tree and shot blast/polished/machined to get better tolerance and surface.

Competitive Advantage:

Precision casting based on the lost wax method is often preferred because:

  • complex shapes can be cast as one part without welding
  • products with counter-relief/inner structures can be cast
  • machining costs are reduced to minumum
  • can be performed on almost any alloy.

Applications:

Water solution industry for pumps, Valves, Pipe Fittings

Automotive

Marine and Oil, gas

Machinery

Power Generation

Energy

Other Mechanical part Castings
