What role does the synthetic sapphire in the LED lights

Usually, GaN base material and devices of the epitaxial layer mainly grows in the sapphire substrate. The sapphire substrate has many advantages: first, the sapphire substrate production technology mature, device quality is better; Secondly, the stability of the sapphire is very good, can use in the process of high temperature growth; Finally, the sapphire, high mechanical strength, easy to handle and cleaning. As a result, most process generally in sapphire substrate. Use a sapphire as substrate, there are some problems, such as lattice mismatch and thermal stress mismatch, it will produce a large number of defects in the epitaxial layer, at the same time for subsequent processing device. Sapphire is a kind of insulator, room temperature resistivity of more than 1011 Ω · cm, in this case cannot make vertical structure of the device; Usually only in the epitaxial layer on the surface to make n and p type electrode (as shown in figure 1).
