An optionally metallically reinforced and laminated graphite flat gasket material is provided, preferably over its entire surface, with a thin metal coating, preferably of copper or nickel, which has been deposited electrolytically or by an electroless method. The metal layer protects the oxidation-sensitive graphite against oxidation by the action of air, without significantly modifying its deformation characteristics. The material can therefore be used to give an improved seal as a high temperature gasket exposed to oxidation conditions, above all as an exhaust flange gasket. Since the metal coating additionally possesses the effect of improving adhesion to polymer layers it can advantageously also be used particularly in cylinder head gaskets made of graphite or having graphite inserts.
