Investment Casting (or) Lost Wax Method

 

A wax made from the mold of the desired shape is created to be invested into a "Ceramic Slurry" bucket.

The slurry covered wax pattern can be dipped into coatings of sand and slurry repeatedly until a suitable thickness of shell is achieved that can hold the weight of molten metal after the wax is burnt out.

 

The "Burn-Out"(dewax) process requires that the wax pattern and coating are heated in an oven that is fired to 1800F so that the wax can flow out and be recovered. The refractory coating is also cured in this procedure.

This process is beneficial for casting metals with high melting temperatures that cannot be moulded in metal.

Parts that are typically made by investment casting include those with complex components such as turbine blades or military components. 

Process principle

This method also called as precision investment casting. It involves the use of wax Pattern with a shell of refractory material surrounded to form a ceramic casting mould. Since the pattern made up of wax is melted out , that is why it named-"Lost wax method".
