Designer introduction:
Swiss-born architect, designer, and theorist Le Corbusier (born Charles édouard Jeanneret) was one of the most important creative figures of the 20th century. He was a pioneer in studies of modern high design and was dedicated to providing better living conditions for the residents of crowded cities.
His career spanned five decades, with his buildings constructed throughout central Europe, India, Russia, and one each in North and South America. He was also an urban planner, painter, sculptor, writer, and modern furniture designer. Influenced by the formal aspects of Cubism and the emphatic 20th-century spirit of Futurism he and painter Amadée Ozenfant invented Purism in 1917, a clean, pure-formed Modernist aesthetic promoted in their manifesto Après le Cubisme of 1918 and followed up in the publication of the periodical Esprit nouveau from 1920 to 1925. As an architect his Villa Savoye (1929) is considered by many to be Le Corbusier most important work. Situated at Poissy, outside of Paris, it is one of the most recognisable architectural presentations of the International Style.
