The Cynosure Apogee Laser emits a specific long pulse of light energy that can destroy its target without harming the overlying tissue. This laser first received FDA approval for the treatment of superficial leg veins and varicosities. The most common side effect following the treatment of leg veins is hair loss in the treatment area.

Another application for this laser is in the treatment of unwanted body hair, which has been used extensively in clinical trials at the Lloyd Laser Center in collaboration with Cynosure. The FDA approved the Apogee for this use two years ago.

The Apogee laser appears to affect only hair follicles which are currently active or growing (anagen), thus subsequent treatments may be required to eliminate the previously exhausted (catagen) or resting (telogen) follicles as they resume production.

The target of the Apogee laser during hair removal is the melanin (brown or black pigment) found in the hair. If the hair does not contain melanin (i.e. white hair) there is no pigment target for the laser and the hair will not be removed.

Hair removal treatments are relatively painless and leave no textural skin changes or the scarring commonly seen with needle electrolysis. The use of the Apogee laser may soon revolutionize the removal of unwanted hair.
