Phthalates Ban Postponed by Denmark

  The Danish Ministry of the Environment has issued a press release postponing an earlier decision to restrict the use of four phthalates.

  Denmark published an order to restrict certain phthalates, Bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and Diisobutyl phthalate (DINP), in November 2011. The order placed a restriction on the use of these substances in products intended for indoor use and in products that may come into contact with skin or mucous membranes.

   However, in a press release issue by the Danish Ministry of the Environment postponed the implementation date of the order restricting the use of phthalates DEHP, DBP, BBP and DIBP.

   The original restriction, due to be in place from 1st December 2013, will now be delayed for two years.

   The Ministry explained that the reason for the postponement is because the use of these phthalates in products such as shower curtains, plastic tablecloths, vinyl floor tiles, cables and wires is more prevalent than the Ministry anticipated. It concluded that manufacturers and retailers require more time in order to phase out their use and to comply with the requirements.

These phthalates are chemicals which are widely used primarily as plasticizers in polyvinylchloride (PVC) products and other synthetic materials to make the polymer more soft and flexible.
