Ernest Race BA3 chair, 1945 Race Furniture
The BA Series of chairs was borne out of War-time restrictions in the use of wood. Race's innovative design utilised aluminium alloy resmelted from aircraft scrap. The BA chair proved to be a resourceful and elegant response to material-supply and manufacturing conditions in the mid 1940s. The design was awarded a Gold Medal at the 1951 Milan Triennale The BA chair is acknowledged as a key design in the history of modern seating and forms part of many museum collections including the V&A.
The chairs offered are early examples with original woven rexine upholstery. Usable chairs from the first production period with a progressive seat and back covers are extremely rare.
