Physical and chemical properties:

colorless crystal or liquid with special fragrance, slightly dissolved in water and benzene,

easily dissolved in glycerine.

Application:
1. In agrochemical: used in the synthesis of sodium 5-nitroguaiacolate.

2. In pharmaceutical: used in the synthesis of anti-inflammatory and antibacterial medicine, such as sulfoguaiacol, ibuprofen guaiacol ester and guaifenesin, etc.

3. In fragrance industry: used as materials of fragrance and also used in the produce of vanillin and artificial musk, etc.  

Guaiacol is the methyl ether of pyrocatechol. It is a main constituent of creosote obtained from wood tar (mainly beech)

by distillation mostly between 203 and 220 C. It is synthesized from anisole also. The dimethyl ether of pyrocatechol is

called veratrol. They and their derivatives are used as an external antiseptic, expectorant, gastric sedative, deodorant,

and as a parasiticide. Methoxyphenols are used in manufacturing stabilizers and antioxidants for plastics and rubbers.

They are also used in analgesics, local anesthetic, flavorings, biocides, antiseptics. 2-Methoxyphenol is used in manufacturing vanillin and other flavorings.
