Compactor Plate

In construction, there are three main types of compactor: the plate compactor, the "Jumping Jack" and the road roller. The roller type compactors are used for compacting crushed rock as the base layer underneath concrete or stone foundations or slabs. The plate compactor has a large vibrating baseplate and is suited for creating a level grade, while the jumping jack compactor has a smaller foot. The jumping jack type is mainly used to compact the backfill in narrow trenches for water or gas supply pipes etc. Road rollers may also have vibrating rollers.

Plate Compactors are low amplitude and high frequency, designed to compact granular soils and asphalt. Gasoline or Diesel engines drive one or two eccentric weights at high speed to develop compaction force. The heavier the plate, the more compaction force it generates. The resulting vibrations cause forward motion also known as a One Way Plate Compactor. Reversible and Hydraulic Reversible Compactors have a reversible plate to allow forward and reverse motion. Unlike standard plates, the reversible forward travel may be stopped and the machine will maintain its force for "spot" compaction. Due to their weight and force, reversible plates are ideal for semi-cohesive soils.
