Description

GinsealSpiral-wound gaskets comprise a mix of metallic and filler ma- terial.Generally, the gasket has a metal (normally carbon rich or stainless steel)wound outwards in a circular spiral (other shapes are possible) with the fillermaterial (generally a flex- ible graphite) wound in the same manner but startingfrom the opposing side. This results in alternating layers of filler and metal. The fillermaterial in these gaskets acts as the sealing element, with the metal providingstructural support. These gaskets have proven to be reliable in mostapplications, and allow lower clamping forces than solid gaskets, albeit with ahigher cost.

How to chooseFiller

The main sealing part isfiller which is made up of SS strip and non- metallic filling tape,the material can be changedaccording to different chemical compatibilityrequirements,

Graphite filling stripis supposed to used in high temperature environment,   

PTFE fillingstripisfor acids and other corrosive mediums

Non - asbestosits useincreased when the health problems with asbestos becameknown. Onlyrecommend for low temperature less severe applications due to the rubber content .

Ceramicis in extremelyhigh temperature applications.The filler is not so common as it cannot achievethe same leak tightness as graphite
